Happy Birthday to the Headline Puzzle!  This puzzle marks 50 years since the first Headline Puzzle appeared in November 1964.

To commemorate this Golden Anniversary, over the next few months we'll re-visit the various forms the Headline Puzzles have evolved through from the first puzzle up to its current form.  This puzzle was constructed similarly to how Paul Derthick made his very first puzzle.

Five Headlines from October 1964 issues of The New York Times have been selected for this puzzle, with plain and cipher components derived from a pangram, a phrase using all 26 letters of the alphabet (example: PACK MY BOX WITH FIVE DOZEN LIQUOR JUGS). Each of the five is a different letter-for-letter substitution.  All five are derived from the same mixed alphabet at different settings against itself.  Please send solutions, questions and comments to the e-mail address shown above.
