Continuing to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Headline Puzzle in November 1964, we now present the fourth of four different variations through which the puzzle has evolved before winding up in the style we use today.  This fourth style of puzzle was used from December 1969 - May 1971, before three different words (or phrases) were used for the setting, key and hat.

In this variation of the Headline Puzzle, Paul Derthick continued to use a five-wide key matrix, but rather than inscribing the keyword-mixed sequence into the grid in a left-to-right, top-to-bottom fashion, he laid out the letters within the grid to create a visual representation of the keyword used.  For instance, in May 1971, the setting of FLORA was used, along with HOUSEPLANT for the key.  But Mr. Derthick placed the letters into the matrix like this:

 F L O R A  <--  SETTING/HAT:  FLORA
 2 3 4 5 1
 ---------
   H   O    <--  KEY:  HOUSEPLANT
     U
   S E P
     L
     A
 N   T   B
   C D F
     G
     I
 J K M Q R
   V   W
   X Y Z

Here's another example. In October 1970, the setting was STATE and the key was VERMONT, creating this gem:

 S T A T E  <--  SETTING/HAT:  STATE
 3 4 1 5 2
 ---------
 V E R M O  <--  HAT:  VERMONT
 N T A B
 C D F G
 H I J K
 L P Q
 S U
 W X
 Y Z

With some squinting, the key does indeed look something like the shape formed by the letters within the five-wide matrix.  This type of puzzle was quite challenging, as the number of letters extracted from each column could vary from a scant few to many.

Keeping alive the salute to the 50th anniversary of the Headline Puzzle, we now present the February 2015 Headline Puzzle, created in a similar fashion as these "Stencil Era" puzzles.

The following are all headlines from recent daily newspapers.   Each of the five is a different letter-for-letter substitution.  All five are derived from the same mixed alphabet at different settings against itself.  Please send solutions (the setting and keyword), questions and comments to the e-mail address shown above.
