Paul Derthick, who invented the Headline Puzzle in 1964, would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year on July 12.  In honor of Mr. Derthick, we are turning back the clock 100 years for July's Headline Puzzle.

The following are all headlines from issues of The New York Times that were published between July 9-15, 1916, the week Paul Derthick was born.  Each of the five is a different letter-for-letter substitution.  All five are derived from the same mixed alphabet at different settings against itself.  Please send solutions, questions and comments to the e-mail address shown above.
