Back to Volunteer Opportunity List

Offices of the Department of Aging.

Within Department of Aging, more than 20 programs deliver a wide range of services to seniors.  20+ Program Directors are seeking friendly and dependable office help.  Computer literacy, general office experience, and ability to help out once a week open many office volunteer opportunities.  For more information visit their website at http://www.aacounty.org/Aging/volunteerOpps/index.cfm

RSVP is a part of the National Senior Corps.  RSVP Volunteers address Community Needs in the areas of Education and Literacy, Homeland Security & Community Safety, Human Services, and the Environment.  RSVP volunteers are covered by supplemental insurance; they work with a job description, receive orientation and on-the-job training.

Friendly Visitor Program.  This well established volunteer project, now under the RSVP wing, cooperates with Telephone Reassurance.  As a Friendly Visitor, you will be introduced to your senior client for regular visits and/or outings.  Clients and volunteers are screened and qualified.  Friendly Visitor volunteers authorize a background check and attend a brief training/orientation before client match-up.  Prepare monthly mailings to volunteers in the field.

VITA -- Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, an important program within Department of Aging.  VITA Volunteers bring tax preparation experience to this demanding job.  They begin every January by reviewing and updating their skills.  From February - April they work in one of our seven senior centers, assisting individuals to file their simple tax returns.  VITA volunteers use IRS computers to e-file most returns.  RSVP welcomes queries from VITA volunteers year round.

Telephone Reassurance.  Now in our 20th year!  Volunteers in teams of two work from our Glen Burnie office, do telephone check-in daily with senior clients across Anne Arundel County. We save lives!  This is a very rewarding experience for clients and volunteers alike!  Schedules available one or two days per month.  Need is immediate!

Senior Center Plus.  Volunteer at one of our 7 senior centers.  Assist the most frail elderly as they engage in conversation, crafts, and other center activities.  Greatest need:  M-Th 9:00-2:00. An excellent opportunity to interact with our senior citizens.

Meals on Wheels:  Urgent need for volunteers in several capacities.  Be a driver, a meal deliverer, or a packer.  Volunteers are assigned to a regular schedule to deliver meals to citizens who are homebound.  Opportunities in all areas of the county.

MD Environmental Trust:  Assist with coordination and management of volunteers monitoring easement properties in MD to ensure compliance with land preservation agreements.  Interest in environment, photography, working with people.  Flex hours 8-16  per week.  Crownsville.
